Ateism, eller att vara ateist innebär att man inte tror att det finns någon gud, gudomlighet, skapare eller liknande. Ordet kommer från grekiskans A-theos vilket betyder Utan-Gud.

Ateister kan delas upp i implicita ateister, de som inte tror på gud men inte gör någon stor sak av det, respektive explicita ateister som aktivt förnekar existensen av någon gud. En annan vanlig indelning är svaga (negativa) ateister som saknar övertygelsen att gud finns och starka (positiva) ateister som är övertygade om att det inte finns någon gud.

Ordet har historiskt ofta använts även om de som haft en annan tro. Romarna kallade exempelvis de kristna för ateister eftersom de inte trodde på gudarna i romersk mytologi.

I Sverige organiserade sig länge ateister och agnostiker i Human-etiska förbundet. Idag är det ombildat till Humanisterna som är en förening för humanister, ateister och agnostiker m.m.
